When I was a high school senior in the early 1970 I was privileged to be nominated as the senior representative at the Massachusetts State House sponsored annual high school symposium. We were to meet with the Governor and State legislators and conduct a mock legislative session where we would vote on bills proposed by my fellow students. I remember only one vote of significance since I was the lone dissenter among the 500 other budding student politicians. That vote was to legalize marijuana.

Lo and behold fifty years later it is now legal in Illinois to purchase marijuana with certain restrictions and on the very first day in 2020 that sales began the distributors ran out of inventory. We should however not be lulled into a false sense of security. Marijuana is a drug and the culture of dope is antithetical to a Torah observant life. We should therefore be vigilant within our community to educate our children and grandchildren to the evils of marijuana and live our lives by example.

While millions across the world celebrated New Years in somewhat nefarious ways, tens of thousands of bnei Torah descended on Met-Life Stadium to celebrate the culmination of Talmud study (siyum Hashas). The adage “ring out the old and bring in the new” has a completely different meaning to the observant Jew steeped in the study of Torah. We would rather say review the old and start again; for this exercise of Torah learning allows us to build on the special relationship we enjoy with Hashem. Let us therefore join the multitudes who are completing shas with a hearty mazel tov and our blessings for onward and upward.

`David Ben Gurion in an address shortly after a successful military victory in July 1948 during the war of Independence stated the following; “ I hope I have said enough to make you understand that VICTORY ALONE, BE IT THE MOST CONCLUSIVE IN WAR AND IN POLITICS, WILL NOT SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS. Even if we emerge into the light, our path will be beset by stumbling-blocks and vexed by mind-ventures. How to win through? …..by intellectual and moral primacy.”

While I would not under usual circumstances quote Ben Gurion for divrei Torah he certainly understood the real challenge of establishing a moral society after the war of Independence. We celebrate a military victory on Chanukah not by parades but by lighting the menorah of the mitzvah Or.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about diplomacy in recent weeks especially when President Trump and former Mayor Guillianni become the topic of conversation. In this week’s Parsha Yaakov chooses angels to do his bidding with Esau. Rashi emphasisizes this point by rejecting the definition “messengers” and reminds us of the angels escorting Yaakov as he leaves Lavan to return to Eretz Yisroel. These sentiments reflect the art of diplomacy includes prayer, spirituality and faith in Hashem. Political operatives may attempt to effect a shared resolution but ultimately hashem determines the final outcome.

The opening of this week’s Parsha Vayetze is a road map for tefilla. Jacob’s ladder is a reference to Jacob’s “communication” with Hashem and Hashem’s response. Prayer is our form of communication with Hashem as we seek guidance, mercy, and consolation. We therefore should use this opportunity to reinvigorate our “kavanna” in prayer and recognize it for the unique and special time that it is.

The impeachment hearings this week centered on Presidents Trump’s alleged attempts to convince the Ukrainian government to investigate certain corruptions identified by some as politically motivated. I have no inclination to weigh in on this sensitive and divisive issue.

I do however wish to share with you my thoughts on Ukraine given the fact that I have visited Ukraine three times including the cities of Kiev, Zhitomir, Berditchev, Uman and Odessa. While each one of the experiences was somewhat different there was one basic common denominator; anti-Semitism. There is a monument in central square Kiev of the notorious Khmelnytsky and of course the Babi- Yar massacre needs no explanation. The Jews were buried alive by Ukrainian collaborators with German encouragement and cruelty. There were no shortages of pogroms throughout the countryside and Nikita Krushchev received good training before becoming secretary general of the Soviet Union by ruling Ukraine with an iron hand.

I saw firsthand public drunkenness, extreme poverty, and third-world culture. I remember vividly that our plane was delayed and we arrived late in the evening at Kiev airport. While waiting for our luggage the workers just shut off the lights and went home. We never got our passports stamped and had quite a time explaining to the exit officers how we got into the country in the first place. It was therefore quite shocking to hear Senate testimony about the Ukrainian attempts to create a country similar to Western Europe and the United States. I hope they and we succeed. In the meantime I will praise our country and thank Hashem every day for the privilege of the freedoms we have and the right to worship freely.
