¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This year on Yom Kippur like every other year we account for our actions and beg forgiveness. Subtly however, there are differences in approach and attitude. Because of covid some of us may feel guilty of not doing enough. Others may be dealing with the isolation or misgivings about not attending required events, visiting the sick, hosting company even including members of ones own family, or going to minyan daily. These are of course normal reactions but on Yom Kippur we internalize even more so. Our teshuva therefore should be directed at actions we are able to control rather than those beyond our capabilities especially in a climate of such uncertainty. In fact we should also account for that we did achieve as well. Despite the chaos beyond we managed to stay in touch. We davened at home to the best of our ability. We took care of our families in the best we know how. Our fervent hope is that this years Yom Kippur davening will strengthen us with a will to ask forgiveness, forgive others and pride at what we achieved.

L’shana Haba B’Yerushalayim.
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. We mention their names at each Torah reading and think about them in our private tefillos. Since we are not at shul with Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This year has been like none other. Yet here we are ready to head into the headwinds with hope, prayer and faith. Just thinking about the Unesana Tokef is enough to make us shiver let alone hear its words and repeat along with the Chazzan. We conclude with the eternal and hopeful prayer that repentance, prayer and charity may avert the evil decree. Shana Tova Umetuka.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This weekend begins the official season of the Yomim Noraim as we commence the selichos prayers in preparation for Rosh Hashanna and Yom HaKippurim. Unfortunately we at the shul will not be convening at midnight due to Covid but we will start shul 15 minutes earlier every day to make amends. In fact making amends is the proper way after all, as that is a primary purpose of these coming weeks of intense prayer, proactive repentance, and acts of charity and good deeds. May we all be inscribed for a year of health peace and happiness.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

The Mitzvah of bikkurim is not just an opportunity to pay homage to God by bringing the first fruits. It is unique to only those who live in Eretz Yisroel. It is an opportunity to connect to the land as much as to God. Living in Eretz Yisroel, traversing its boundaries, davening at the Kotel all allow the inhabitant to strengthen ones connection to God and Eretz Yisroel. The two are intertwined forever.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Now that both major political parties concluded their respective conventions, we who are concerned citizens with strong Jewish identity need to review the candidates positions, temperament and records. More importantly we also have a road map-the Torah to teach us right from wrong. This weeks Parshas Ki Tetze warns its readers against immorality and encourages proper behavior in society. Let us then take this guide and hold these truths to be self-evident.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Its here already Rosh Chodesh Elul. We begin the sounding of the shofar, the recitation of extra prayers including L’Dovid Hashem Ori, along with a serious effort at retrospection, reflection and repentance. Our hopes, and desires for a healthy year together with a peaceful society especially in our city are at the forefront of our wish list as we engage in prayer, repentance and charity.

Good Shabbos
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Last week the
world lost one of the most eminent spokesman for Torah, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. I underscore the world for Rabbi Steinsaltz was successful in teaching Torah not just to the Orthodox Jewish community but to countless others as well. Most of our generation remember how as a trailblazer he opened the mysterious sea of the Talmud with a Hebrew translation (eventually in English as well) and laid the foundation for many clones thereafter. Hundreds of thousands of Torah students from all walks of life have seen their intellectual and spiritual worlds enhanced by his prolific and tireless efforts. In addition he spearheaded movements to teach Torah in Russia and transform chassidus into understandable and expressive language. He was a recipient of the Israel prize, taught countless classes, and radiated the “panim” of Torah wherever he went. He also had the unique ability to express the ethical and moral principles of Torah, without triumphalism and with great humility.

May his memory be a blessing.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

We continue this weekend with the second Haftorah of comfort. In fact from now until Rosh Hashanna we read a total of seven Haftorahot of comfort. We need this. So many are still feeling the “exile” of covid. Our lives have been transformed. Parents with school-aged children, teachers, workers both employed or unemployed know little about the next few weeks let alone months. We therefore take comfort in the words of the Prophets and pray that this year Rosh Hashanna will bring a new beginning.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

The Kinnot are filled with references to the exile, destruction and tragic loss of human life throughout our history. Yet included as well are references that Hashem (Kabiyochel, as it were) is also a victim alongside the Jewish people. Our cries, dirges, and I dare say complaints on Tisha B’Av are directed not necessarily to Hashem but rather with Hashem. So does the consolation begin this Shabbos Nachamu. For as we begin the long journey of consolation we do so with Hashem walking alongside giving us hope and encouragement. Nahcamu Nachamu -May we be comforted.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

On Tisha B’Av we mourn not only the loss of the Beis Hamikdash and Jerusalem but we also sit shiva for the countless lives lost as a result of destruction. Stone structures may be rebuilt bit human life is sacrosanct. This is the greatest tragedy of the three weeks and the ninth of Av.

The incredible loss of life due the current plague affecting the world is worthy of our sitting shiva as well. This year while we will sit whether at home or shul and read the kinos we unfortunately personalize the tragedy of Tisha B’Av. We pray for the end of this magefa and hope that next year Tisha B’Av will turn to a day of celebration.
