FOR WOMEN:

Shabbos’ Women’s Tehillim: Please join together “virtually” this Shabbos afternoon, 4:00 to recite Tehillim. It is more important now than ever that our community comes together for this all important service. May HKB”H answer our tefillos speedily.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This week we celebrate the Kehilla Fund of Chicago. Through our contributions and their joint efforts, our children at the day schools and Yeshivot have benefited enormously in some many ways. However, it is not just the students that have reaped thew rewards. Every member of the community realizes the communal reward of educating Jewish children. Just as we read about the communal dedications to the mishkan in the Parshiot during these next few weeks, so too do we dedicate ourselves to the mission of the Kehilla Fund.
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. Let Hashem hear our tefillos on their behalves, and all have a speedy recovery. If there is a choleh that needs a misheberach, please email their name to anshemotele@sbcglobal.net .
Since we are not currently making the Mishebarach at Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This past week’s attack on a shul in Texas is an attack on us all. The Islamist terrorist does not distinguish between a reform, conservative or orthodox institution. In fact there as one attack several years ago on a JCC in California. We therefore stand together as one to combat hate and violence against Jews anywhere.

I found it ironic and disturbing that the attack probably coincided with our reading of the portion of Amalek, as if we need to be reminded. Zachor al tishkach Remember and never forget.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

In case we may have been in a cocoon and missed the news, last week marked the anniversary of the election  protest at the Capitol Rotunda. Whatever our personal political view of the candidates we all agree that January 7 was a dark day in our nation’s history. There is however a more disturbing trend. A recent poll showed many (not a majority) believe a different scenario where the Capitol riot was perpetrated not by Trump supporters but by the anti-Trumpers. Whether one considers what happened on January 7 an incursion, riot, insurrection or simply a crowd gone wild, it was no doubt a pro-Trump gathering. Let’s not be blind to the facts. You need not be a democrat to know the facts.
The next to last plague was darkness. The Netziv explains that  since the Egyptians were blind to the sufferings of the Bnei Yisroel they themselves were punished with darkness as a prelude to the tenth and final plague.
We read last week about some horrible abuses which took place by a famed children’s author in Bnei Brak. Some accepted the truths and are attempting to right the wrongs. Others (also a minority) cover their eyes and cast aspersions against the accusers. Our challenge is to never look away from human suffering and to see the truth as best as we can. This will help us first and foremost to deal with the heavy issues sanely with maturity and forthrightness. Our faith in Hashem together with  sympathetic and empathetic dispositions should guide us as we seek true righteousness.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

It defies logic that a leader would prefer devastation over greatness, defeat over prosperity. Yet that is what Pharaoh chose when defying the obvious. Rather than allowing the Jewish nation (which ironically had been a major reason for Egyptian dominance as the world power0 the right to worship Hashem he doubled down on oppression. Instead of partnering with the righteous he allowed his evil ego to overcome and confuse what should have been in his and his countryman’s best interest.
Let’s hope that the world leaders today from China to Russia, Iran and North Korea learn these lessons.

The Torah is as relevant today as ever and we must re-read, study and of course pray to Hashem to fulfill all of its prophecies.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

When Yaakov blesses his children before his passing, he does so both collectively and individually. The point of course is to stress that Klal Yisroel receives its strength by utilizing their individual potentials as part of the society. The State of Israel is a collection of many different shades of Jews (and a significant Arab minority). Yet whether one is religious or secular the goal of a unified State is of utmost importance. Maintaining that balance has always been a challenge but for the sake of the Jewish people needs to be preserved. Yaakov led the way, let us learn by example.

This Shabos is special! Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah. Additionally we begin reciting Tal Umatar on Saturday night at Maariv. With all the additions to the davening we by necessity become much more careful about our tefillah. We need to recite yaalah vayovoh, al hanisim, atah yatzartah (in musaf) and of course tal umatar at maariv. We also take out three sifrei Torah. This gives us the additional incentive to pay close attention to the davening, be more circumspect and have greater kavanah. Let us use this unique opportunity to pay homage to Hashem even as we celebrate the rare triple header as the momentous event it is.

Good Shabbos, Chodesh Tov and Happy Chanukah.
