¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This Shabos is special! Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah. Additionally we begin reciting Tal Umatar on Saturday night at Maariv. With all the additions to the davening we by necessity become much more careful about our tefillah. We need to recite yaalah vayovoh, al hanisim, atah yatzartah (in musaf) and of course tal umatar at maariv. We also take out three sifrei Torah. This gives us the additional incentive to pay close attention to the davening, be more circumspect and have greater kavanah. Let us use this unique opportunity to pay homage to Hashem even as we celebrate the rare triple header as the momentous event it is.

Good Shabbos, Chodesh Tov and Happy Chanukah.
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. Let Hashem hear our tefillos on their behalves, and all have a speedy recovery. If there is a choleh that needs a misheberach, please email their name to anshemotele@sbcglobal.net .
Since we are not currently making the Mishebarach at Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

I found it fascinating that in the year 2021 at the very border of Grodno (Belorussian) and Poland a possible international crisis may arise. There you may know there is a tense border dispute with Iraqi immigrants in the middle. The symbolism is obvious. None of the three protagonist cared very much for the plight of the Jews in the years 1938-1945. In fact not caring is an obvious understatement. Their joint hatred of the Jews is so palatable that right up to this present day they continue to blame the Jews for their woes.

This weeks Parsha relates the epic struggles of Jacob ans Esau. Our challenge is to do as Jacob did; develop good diplomacy, but be prepared for any situation. Thankfully today we have a strong State of Israel that is as assiduous at both.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

I recently attended a JUF seminar exploring the latest demographic study of Chicago metropolitan Jewry. What was more interesting than the usual and expected results were the comments from the non-orthodox clergy reacting to the downward trends of their membership numbers. During the q and a several of them expressed unease and dissatisfaction with the post covid tendency to zoom into shabbat and holiday services. They bemoaned the social isolation, the lack of communal prayer and the distancing of congregant and clergy. Interestingly the orthodox movement has for the most part reconvened not fully or without precaution but nevertheless at least in communal prayer. This has helped solidify the very nature of our ability to persevere and eventually grow. That may be one of the main reasons that the orthodox movement has been the only one of the major denominations to rise in number.

In this weeks Parsha we witness Yaakov’s prayer reaching the heavens but more importantly the prayers received and answered. It is the template of what davening is all about. We are allowed private time at shul (or at home) to commune with Hashem and allow the prayers to reach the highest peaks of heaven. When we stand before Hashem, we are to be cognizant of these sentiments and use those precious moments to concentrate with devotion (kavanah). Let us rededicate ourselves to prayer with kavanah and encourage our fellow Jews to do the same.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Reports if accurate is that the United States State Department wishes to open an American consulate in Jerusalem. If true this would clearly violate the sovereignty of Israel and its right to its capital Jerusalem.
This weeks parsha highlights the central theme of sovereignty over the land by the Jewish People as we witness Avrohoms excruciatingly difficult negotiations for not only a burial plot for Sarah but also to maintain ownership over the land. We pray that these reports are not accurate and out Government will respect the integrity of Israel.

Both Avrohom and Sarah laughed when told that Sarah in the latter stage in life would give birth to a son. Avrohom however was told after his bris milah by Hashem while Sarah heard it from the three angels disguised as men. The first reaction was overwhelming joy while the second may have been a nervous or defensive laughter after all the years of prayer, hope, disappointment even while maintaining an optimistic view of life. Nevertheless, their faith in Hashem allowed the laughter to extend even to the naming of the great Tzadik Yitzchak whose personality embodied the very faith demonstrated by both, each in their own respective ways. These are the challenges we face every day when forging a joyful, yet serious view of life ahead, by joining these two divergent emotions we are able to face the world with full faith in Hashem.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

We are introduced to Avrohom this week with what our Sages determine to be one of the 10 tests that he overcame. Here he is told to leave his home and go on “aliya” to the land destined to become Eretz Yisroel. Yet he is also promised wealth, fame, and success. The question we all ask ourselves is how many of us would drop everything to go on aliya if we were assured the same. Would we drop everything call Nefesh Bnefesh head to the airport and be on the next El-Al flight to Tel Aviv? I guess the answer is probably yes but for most of not necessarily a slam dunk. It’s a different culture, climate, topography, and filled with political intrigue. We are leaving our families, homes, and way of life. Furthermore, wealth fame and success carry its own challenges. How do we utilize this newfound world? Are we better able to manage this kind of success? These are but some of the challenges facing Avrohom. Thankfully he overcame those obstacles and hurdled past the finish line. His successful aliya spearheaded hundreds of thousands throughout Jewish history.
