¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

The masses love a scapegoat. We tend to blame certain failures on others and especially individuals. This past week serves as a classic example. Corey Parkey the kicker for the Chicago Bears was blamed for last Sunday’s playoff loss despite having kicked three previous field goals and having the last one blocked! Even before knowing the facts everyone rushed to judgment; after all nobody else was at fault; not the defense for giving up a crucial score or the offense for anemic plays. May I remind you of Steve Bartman and Bill Buckner, two villains whose names remain in infamy.

In the real world many attribute the holocaust to “Hitler’s crimes” as if the Germans were but minor players. In this week’s Parsha we read how Pharaoh’s obstinacies are backed by his officers and his people until they realize that all is lost. It took his entire bureaucracy and infrastructure to persecute the Jews and thus they are all held equally responsible.

We learnt a good lesson this week. Be careful not to blame everything on one person especially before knowing the facts and now that we do we need to take a step back and realize that we are equally culpable for our community. Football is only a game, life however is too precious.
