¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This year celebration of Shavous takes on a whole new meaning. Most of us are used to late night communal learning, milchig Kiddush in shul, Megillat Ruth and Yizkor with our fellow Congregants. We unfortunately will have to celebrate and commemorate in relative isolation. Even those synagogues and Kollelim open are also very limited in attendance, restricted communal singing, social distancing and limited Torah reading. We however also have an opportunity to make this year an even more meaningful Shavous. With all the down time we may focus on elongated prayer, deeper concentration on the the Book of Ruth, and quality time learning Torah. Shavous changed the dynamic of the Bnei Yisroel’s relationship with Hashem. Let us take this task and make it our own.

Good Yom Tov and Shabbos
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. We mention their names at each Torah reading and think about them in our private tefillos. Since we are not at shul with Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

Do to the COVID-19 virus, our shul remains temporarily closed until further notice as per the CDC guidelines. Our stay at home orders were extended to May 31 and we hope to be together again as soon as possible.

Update: Although the State of Illinois has relaxed the restrictions and is allowing gatherings of 10 people, and some other shuls have already started minyanim, the CRC, OU and RCA in conjunction with infectious disease experts have reiterated their collective opinion to wait at least 2 weeks after the next phase of our State’s reopening plan to see if at that time it would be safe to resume minyanim.
The mitzvah to protect ourselves is paramount to any of the other mitzvos including tefilla b’tzibur.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

It is hard to imagine the Bnei Yisroel nation on a forty year journey through the Sinai Desert. Yet this is exactly the picture painted for us in this week’s Parasha. We learn of the encampments, the opening and closing as they prepared to travel, the layers of protection and the spiritual growth necessary for physical advancement. Certainly we should be able to relate to the importance of physical safety in order to protect our spiritual souls and we pray that soon we will all be able to embark on our own individual and communal journeys back at shul.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This week’s double-parasha Behar- Bechukosai carries with it the essence of our belief in Hashem. The first emphasizes the laws of shemittah/yovel and requires the agricultural society of Eretz Yisroel to refrain from planting and tilling every seven years. The second reminds of the great responsibility and consequences of our Jewish heritage and commitment to Hashem’s ways. The brechot and kellalot are reminders of awesome relationship with Hashem. As we continue yet another week in quarantine we pray that just as we conclude the reading of Sefer Vayikrah with the words Chazak Chazak Vnizchazak so too may we be strengthened with these very same sentiments this weekend and beyond.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Lag b’Omer

This coming week we celebrate Lag BOmer. Jews around the world commemorate it with parades, bonfires, haircuts for their three year old boys in Meron, and of course we refrain from reciting Tachnun during the tefilot of the day. The origins and the meaning of the day is quite relevant; for it was on this day, as recorded in the Talmud,, that the terrible plague that decimated thousands of students of Rabbi Akiva ceased on that very day. While we mourn during the entire period ofthe sefirat h’omer, Lag B’Omer has become the great respite from the dark mourning we observe. Yet another reason for Lag B’Omer ‘s semi holiday status is because we observe the yahrtziet of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai, the star pupil of Rabbi Akiva and the author of the Zohar.

Perhaps this year even though we are isolated in our homes and unable to participate in any public celebrations, we are able to identify with the day itself. We pray first of all for the current plague to cease. In addition, we take great pride in Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who lived in a cave for 14 years while hiding from the Roman persecutions. He and his son learned Torah throughout that period with great intensity and with utmost concentration. What might be more relevant a lesson than that as we welcome Lag B’Omer this year with the hope and prayer that soon we will resume a life filled with good health live and breathe the teachings of Rabbi Akiva and the passion of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai.

Good Shabbos and Happy Lag B’Omer

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Some of you may have read John Kass’s article in the Tribune this past week about the Leon Family here in West Rogers Park (thanks to Sherwin Mishkin for forwarding the article). If you haven’t read it I recommend it for it encapsulates many of the ups and downs (mostly ups) for the orthodox Jewish community not only pre covid but throughout our cycles of family, holidays, and traditions. Yet even or perhaps because of our isolation we are able to see the good in others and wake up each day in appreciation for what we have. Kedoshim –Holy shall we be the Torah commands on the second of this week’s Parasha. While there may be different interpretations we may all agree that it is both an awesome responsibility and a vote of confidence from Hashem. Let us use this opportunity to grow spiritually be strengthened and emerge as better people than ever before.

Good Shabbos

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Greetings to all on this Rosh Chodesh Iyar. While we commemorate Yom Hashoa and celebrate Yom Haatzmeut in the privacy and hopefully safety of our homes we also do so with the same and perhaps greater fervor then we might in the public theatre. We might consider that Anne Frank and family attempted to survive the brutality of the Germans during World War II by hiding in a tiny attack in Amsterdam. Every siren they heard may have been directed at them. Those who lived in Eretz Yisroel prior to May 1948 and defended the country pre and post independence know very well the pains of isolation but the single-minded purpose of their mission. The late great Menachem Begin hid in room after room running and hiding from the British who had a bounty of his life. Natan Sharansky lived in isolation in the Gulag yet survived and thrived through hope and prayer that one day he will succeed in making aliyah. These are both the challenges and hopes that we face on this very week of Yom Hashoa, Yom Haatzmeut and Rosh Chodesh Iyar.

Good Shabbos, Chodesh Tov and Chag Someach.

Halachic Guidelines for Pesach 5780
Agudath Israel, Chicago Rabbinical Council

Dear Chicago Jewish Community,
The current situation demands of us to make several changes to our annual Pre-Pesach routine and rely upon available leniencies for extenuating circumstances such as these. Despite the current challenge and the modifications and limitations that are in place, we can rise as a community to have a meaningful and uplifting Pesach.

Please be advised of the following guidelines for our community-

Tevillas Keilim
At this time the keilim mikvahs are closed. For those buying new untensils for Pesach, the following options are available to be exempt from tevilla-
1. Sell the utensils to a Non-Jew and then borrow them to be used on Pesach. For those that won’t need to use the keilim until Erev Pesach, this can be included in the contract for Mechiras Chametz.
2. Make the utensils hefker in front of three people over the phone, or video conferencing. (The CRC has a service to help with this) Under these circunstances, when possible, it is praiseworth to use disposables or new utensils that don’t need tevilla. When the situation improves and it is deemed safe to use the keilim mikvah again, one should re-acquire the keilim and do tevillas keilim at that time with a bracha.

Biur Chametz
To prevent the gathering of people, there will be no public Biur Chameta this year. Additionally, for safety reasons, it is not advisable for individuals to make their own fires. The best approach under these circumstances is to simply throw excess chametz into the garbage and fulfill the mitzvah of biur chametz by taking 10 pieces of bread from bedikas chametz, crumble them into small pieces and flush them away during the time of Biur (prior to the end of the fifth hour of the day), followed by the declaration of Bitul.

Sellin Chametz Gamur
Individuals that ordinarilly do not sell chametz gamur should consider doing so this year. This will minimize the amount of store visits necessary and will help avoid potetial food shortages. Individuals that in the past did not sell chamez gamur may do so this year even without hatars nedarim (as long as they intend to continue their stringency in future years; otherwise hataras nedarim would be necessary).

Kashering and Cleaning for Pesach
All kashering should be done following the regular procedure of all other years. Individuals making Pesach for the first time should contact their Rav for guidance. Cleaning should be done well, but wit the extra pressures this year, we would like to remind the community what is halachically expected of them when cleaning. This is not a year that one should be unnecessarily machmir while Pesach cleaning-
Areas with no food contact (e.g. bedrooms, basement, living room etc) These areas only need to be cleaned to remove significant pieces of chametz. Technically, small crumbs do not need to be looked for.
Areas with food contact (e.g. kitchen, dining room, pantry) These areas need to be cleaned thoroughly. Any area that cannot be reached or well cleaned can be sprayed with a cleaning agent that will render any remaining chametz completely inedible.
Areas that are too difficult to clean should simply be locked up and included in the mechira.

Garbage Pickup
Due to the circumstances, the city will not be providing a special garbage pickup on Erev Pesach this year. Please not, however, that in Chicago the bins belong to the city and it is sufficient to just place all garbage into the bins before the zman issur. In neighborhoods where the bins are property of the homeowner, the garbage bins should be included in the Meciras Chametz. In both scenarios the bins should ideally be moved off the homeowner’s property.

Taanis Bechorim
Bechorim should ideally make their own siyum on Erev Pesach. A minyan is not needed for the siyum. Otherwise, this year it is acceptable to join a siyum via the phone or videoconfferencing and then something should be eaten in honor of the simcha. Check if your shul is providing a Siyum, alternatiely Agudath Israel will be providing siyumim. If one misses all the siyumim, he should not fast this year as it is important to maintain one’s strength.

Maos Chitim
Please remember to give generously to Maos Chitim. There are unfortunately more families than ever that can use the assistance. Thank You

With wishes for a healthy Chag Kasher V’sameach
