HIGH HOLIDAY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: We are now in a very auspicious time leading into Slichos, Rosh Hashanah, Aseres Yomei Teshuvah, Yom Kippur and the Sukkos season. We are sounding the shofar daily and reciting L’Dovid to our daily tefillos each shacharis and maariv.

We begin sounding the shofar this Sunday Rosh Chodesh Elul. This of course is our wake-up call to begin the teshuva process. The children are headed back to school, the bachurim to Yeshiva and the bachuros to seminary. Soon the house will be bustling with Challah and honey and plans to build the sukkah are already unfolding. Let us therefore use this weekend to take a breath and welcome the new Chodesh as the wonderful opportunity it is.

This weekend we commemorate Tisha BAv. As we sit shiva we contemplate the tragedy of the loss of the Temple, its population and the years of exile which ensued. The losses are deeply personal. For those who survived the Shoah or children of survivors there are deep scars that never go away. Thus, the day is both horrific and therapeutic. In the evening and the next morning, we sit on the low stool and read the unreadable and review the book of lamentations. By the afternoon we slowly rise and put on tefillin as we attempt to integrate in the world of normalcy and life once again. May Tisha BAv this year be turned to a day of celebration and full redemption.

We begin this week the nine days leading towards Tisha B’Av the most tragic day in the Jewish calendar. As we increase our sorrow we realize that it is necessary to slowly build our emotional experience. That is why we are forbidden to listen to music, eat fleishig or launder clothes during this period. Thus on Tisha B’Av itself we sit on a low stool, fast, and recite Kinot. Let us hope and pray that we will soon experience Tisha B’Av as a chag and see the redemption soon.

President Biden is currently in Israel for the tenth time since the time he had been elected a Senator from the State of Delaware. While his predecessor was the first to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem, President Biden has not reversed nor condemned these actions. We see that resolve, perseverance and disseminating the truth will prevail.
In this weeks Parshas Balak, Balaam attempts to condemn the Jewish people subtly but forcefully. He utilizes some of the same tropes shared by the anti-Zionist Jew haters who hide behind political slogans and victim sympathies. Like Balaam before these efforts are doomed to fail. They are initiated by donkey like enemies whose true colors will eventually be revealed. Our goal is to remain vigilant, have Emunah in Hashem and speak the truth.

Last Monday’s shooting shocked our community. When we first heard of the carnage, we instinctively considered anti=semitic as the motive. After all Highland Park is very Jewish. Additionally, many of us remember July 4 weekend over twenty years ago when Benjamin Smith an avowed member of the Nazi club of Illinois drove through West Rogers Park and Skokie shooting Jews Blacks and Asians randomly to kill as many of his perceived enemies as possible. In fact, it was miracle that more were not killed or maimed then and now. According to police reports the shooter last Monday shot over eighty rounds from an assault rifle from a roof at a crowded parade route of unsuspecting people. Few if any were injured in the resulting evacuation. This horrific event hit too close to home. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, first responders and the extended community. May Hashem grant us comfort as we move forward with resolve and faith.

The Menorah is the symbol of the Jewish people both spiritually and expressively. Whether it is the menorah of the Temple, the Chanukah menorah of today displayed prominently at the Knesset in Jerusalem. It recognizes the light of Torah, ethics, and morality. The candelabra is not just an adornment. It is our spiritual soul.
