¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Yesterdays assault on our nation’s Capital shook (temporarily) our country’s core values of democracy and representative government. Thankfully the mob violence did not cause the massive damage it might have though tragically there was some loss of life. We are reminded however about much more severe consequences that did occur in other countries including the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 and the Nazi takeover of the Wiemar Republic in 1933. In both these cases agrieved followers of charismatic leaders stormed the palaces of government and established communist and fascist dictatorships. Those catastophic events resulted in millions and millions of deaths throughout the world including of course six million kedoshim. We shall also remember the many brave American and Allied soldiers who sacrificed their lives fighting for good over evil.

This week we begin reading SeferShemos which relates the saga of Pharaoh, the enslavement of Am Yisroel, the birth of Moshe and the ultimate redemption by Hashem. In Sefer Shemos we read how Pharaoh enlisted his people to his campaign but also caused untold suffering to their nation and themselves through the ten plagues. Ultimately they experienced the ultimate punishment by drowning in the Yam Suf after pursuing the newly freed nation.. The power potential of a demagogue to motivate regular people to defy logic and engage in self destructive behavior is exhibit A in sefer Shemos. Of course everything is from Hashem and ultimately it is our purpose in life to learn from life’s experiences, history and live a life of Torah and Mitzvos.

May Hashem continue to bless us with the great potentials of the United States.

Good Shabbos
Rabbi A. M. Abramson

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. We mention their names at each Torah reading and think about them in our private tefillos. Let Hashem hear our tefillos on their behalves, and all have a speedy recovery. If there is a choleh that needs a misheberach, please email their name to anshemotele@sbcglobal.net .
Since we are not at shul with Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Chazal (our Sages) tell us that even if Asarah Beteves were to occur on Shabbos we would commemorate the fast on that very day. The realization that the beginning of the Churban (destruction of the Beis Hamikdash) was in itself a tragedy of epic proportions should not be lost on any one of us. The very fact that the Jewish people lost their right of movement, human dignity, and religious expression serves as reminder the galus (exile) that we should integrate in our lives as well. Our current predicament of social isolation due to covid pandemic is a small reminder of the human suffering of our ancestors. May Hashem bring about a speedy geulah (redemption) soon.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

There was an article yesterday which reported that doctors were able to get an extra dose of covid vaccine from the vials sent from Pfizer. This will help hasten the vaccine distributions since more people will receive their shots earlier than projected. I read this report just about the same time I was to light the Chanukah menorah symbolizing the miracle of the oil lasting eight days instead of the expected one. In fact the speed in which the vaccine was produced and approved is pretty miraculous as well. We are in Hashem’s hands and pray that the dark period of covid will succumb to the light of medicinal victory.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This year we celebrate Chanukah like no other. Forced to isolate due to the pandemic we nevertheless proudly light the candles to the public and announce our faith in Hashem. We recognize that all events are part of Hashem’s world and the miracle of Chanukah, while accomplished through the bravery and faith of the Chashmonaim was completely Hashem’s work. We pray that the Chanukah of the future will witness the menorah in the Beis Hamikdash with hundreds of thousands celebrating its chaukas habayis.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This Saturday night we begin reciting Tal Umater to reflect the winter solstice and our recognition that the dew and water are blessings from Hashem. In Eretz Yisroel they already began its recitation but here the diaspora we follow time according to the Talmud to return from the chagim to the safety of our homes. We have now traveled full cycle from the last chagim, and we place our trust in hashem as we face a dark winter with Emunah and resolve.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

We read with dismay the CDC warning against family Thanksgiving dinner. Yet we experienced these same warnings on Pesach, Shavous, summer vacation, Rosh Hashanana, Sukkos and of course who would believe that we would not enjoy Kol Naarim under the chuppa on Simchas Torah. Still we have much to give thanks this year. Our country successfully saw a Presidential election even in the midst of the pandemic. Whether your candidate won or lost we must marvel at the strength and fortitude of our democracy. The Mayflower compact set in motion nation of values, religious conviction and respect for individual freedom. We Jews are a manifestation of Yehudah who was name which means to give thanks is highlighted in this week’s parasha.

We have all been davening with extra intensity since at least March of this year. Recently there have been many communications about the importance of reciting Tehillim and unfortunately the many cholim in ur community. I this week’s parasha Todot we read about the power of prayer, how Yitzchok’s teffilot were accepted by Hashem and the gift of life which ensued. Let us take the opportunity to increase our :kavanah” even more so if that’s possible so we may see a “yeshua” in the very near future.

Good Shabbos

There has been much speculation in the pro-Israel community as to President-elect Biden’s approach to the Middle East. Certainly President Trump has approached matters differently than did President Obama but much has changed since then and Preisdent-elect Biden will need to deal with the present facts on the ground rather than four years ago. Interestingly Mr. Biden had stated at one point that he had no plans to move the American embassy back from Jerusalem to Tel-Aviv. Hopefully this message will resonate with our allies and foes alike. More importantly it is a direct political and religious declaration that Jerusalem is the capitol of a sovereign nation founded in 1948, but gifted to Avrohom described by the Torah. That is why this week’s Parsha depicting the intense negotiations between Avrohom and the Bnei Ches carries so much significance. Sovereignty over the land is established by contract and Hashem’s promise to the Jewish people is memorialized for all time. May Hashem bless President-elect Biden with the wisdom and fortitude to carry these sentiments to the White House come January 20, 2021.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Last shabbos at Mincha I had the privilege of laining the Torah portion. I must confess however that it was not as pleasant an experience as when I would do it in normal conditions. Wearing a mask my glasses fog up, I have a hard time seeing the words, pronouncing the cantillation, and even breathing properly. Sure enough I came across an article today in the Wall Street Journal written by Mike Kerrigan of Charlotte, North Carolina with the title, “The Fog of Worship With Face masks.” There he “kvetches” about the challenges of attending church with a face mask while trying to read the homily. In fact he had trouble even finding his seat in his socially distant pew. I recommend the article highly and if you ask I’ll forward you a copy. We who have made the effort to attend services understand full well the experience of masks and fog. At the same time we appreciate even being able to that. Ultimately Mr. Kerrigan concludes with the following, “I have never experienced the fog of war, but I have endured the fog of worship”. To which I say Amen!

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

This coming Tuesday is election day. We always stress the importance of voting and this year is no exception. Interestingly most people who I have spoken to have already voted so this reminder may be a mere formality. Nevertheless it goes without saying that our vote counts not just as citizens but as committed Jews. It is fascinating that President’s Trump’s daughter is an orthodox convert and her children are Jewish. Former Vice President Biden has a Jewish daughter-in-law, and Senator Harris is married to a Jewish man. In the scheme of things it does not add up to much and political power depends on many factors. If not for Hashem’s intervention Queen Esther would not have succeeded in thwarting Haman’s evil intentions. Yet there is something strange in the winds. Chelsea Clinton married a Jewish man in an “inter-faith” ceremony and Jews have risen to some of the the highest positions of the corporate and political world. When Avrohom, as related in this week’s Parsha sought to save the world through monotheism, moral and ethical behavior, he also set the standards for the Jewish community for future generations. Our hope and prayer is that we will be able to continue the Abrahamic dynasty not through assimilation but but by our commitment to his and Sarah’s values.
