¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Both Avrohom and Sarah laughed when told that Sarah in the latter stage in life would give birth to a son. Avrohom however was told after his bris milah by Hashem while Sarah heard it from the three angels disguised as men. The first reaction was overwhelming joy while the second may have been a nervous or defensive laughter after all the years of prayer, hope, disappointment even while maintaining an optimistic view of life. Nevertheless, their faith in Hashem allowed the laughter to extend even to the naming of the great Tzadik Yitzchak whose personality embodied the very faith demonstrated by both, each in their own respective ways. These are the challenges we face every day when forging a joyful, yet serious view of life ahead, by joining these two divergent emotions we are able to face the world with full faith in Hashem.

REFUAH SH’LAIMAH:
To all those who are not well as well as those worldwide with this virus. Let Hashem hear our tefillos on their behalves, and all have a speedy recovery. If there is a choleh that needs a misheberach, please email their name to anshemotele@sbcglobal.net .
Since we are not currently making the Mishebarach at Torah readings, in your private shmone esrai, you can include in the “Refaeinu” paragraph a special tefilla for the cholim that you have in mind.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

We are introduced to Avrohom this week with what our Sages determine to be one of the 10 tests that he overcame. Here he is told to leave his home and go on “aliya” to the land destined to become Eretz Yisroel. Yet he is also promised wealth, fame, and success. The question we all ask ourselves is how many of us would drop everything to go on aliya if we were assured the same. Would we drop everything call Nefesh Bnefesh head to the airport and be on the next El-Al flight to Tel Aviv? I guess the answer is probably yes but for most of not necessarily a slam dunk. It’s a different culture, climate, topography, and filled with political intrigue. We are leaving our families, homes, and way of life. Furthermore, wealth fame and success carry its own challenges. How do we utilize this newfound world? Are we better able to manage this kind of success? These are but some of the challenges facing Avrohom. Thankfully he overcame those obstacles and hurdled past the finish line. His successful aliya spearheaded hundreds of thousands throughout Jewish history.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

Beginning on Rosh Hashanna and continuing through the ten days of repentance we coronate Hashem as our King. By invoking the words Hamemech Hakodesh, Hamelech Hamishpat, the malchiot in the mussaf and the sounding of the shofar we engage in a ten day coronation ceremony culminating in the final shofar blast at Neila of Yom Kippur. This coronation so to be speak is not that Hashem needs the honor and glory but rather for us his chosen people to feel apart of G-d’s kingdom. When we realize the awesome responsebility that we are part of Hashem’s world then we are able to engage in repentance prayer and charity.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

We Americans have always prided ourselves as leading the world towards freedom and democracy. Unfortunately, events of these past few weeks have effectively shattered that vision. It is interesting to note that at the same time as the explosions at Kabul happened Israeli Prime Minister Bennet is to meet with President Biden. We hope that the strong relationship between our two countries continue to flourish, but if the events these past few days are any indication, we also know that Israel is best when she defends herself. In the words of this weeks Parsha may we be the “head and not the tail”.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

The swift collapse of the American sponsored government in Afghanistan is a stark reminder of the limits of American military and diplomatic capabilities. More importantly it is also a signal to all Israelis that they must be vigilant in defense of their country. It did not go unnoticed how the supporters of the PA and Hamas celebrated the defeat of the Afghan Army and the humiliating withdrawal of American personnel.

This weeks Parsha opens with the warning of how soldiers are to behave in the battlefield as they pursue the enemy. The Torah recognizes the necessity of war both offensive and defensive. It is the soldier who must carry that burden. If their morale is broken and they do not abide by a military code of ethics, then all will be lost. We just witnessed that very point this week. We pray that our American soldiers recently sent to Kabul will prevail in their mission and at the same time daven for the Chayalei Tzvah Haganah L’Yisroel.
