The Rambam summarizes the great contribution of Avrohom to the world of monotheism and why he is selected as the father of the Jewish people. In his magna opus Mishna Torah Maimonides records the origins of idolatry and how a young Abram (eventually to be named Avrohom) split with conventional faith of his generation and showed the world the importance of worshipping the one Elohim creator of the universe.

Today baruch Hashem we are experiencing a renaissance of Orthodox Judaism. If, however we realize that but a generation ago conventional wisdom within the Jewish community advocated for public school assimilation, secular university, and looked upon Orthodoxy as archaic, irrelevant and backward thinking. Yet even many of those same detractors have developed respect for our perseverance and have attempted to emulate these same commitments made by those of the previous generation and especially those who survived the Shoah and imported their sacred Emunah in Hashem.

Avrohom and Sarah led the way and it is our responsibility to continue in their path.

To baseball fans around the world last night’s seventh game of the World Series was the pinnacle of major league sports. More than the Super Bowl basketball or hockey playoffs the seventh game of a World Series after a grueling 162 game schedule is a baseball fans dream game. Perhaps lost in the excitement then is a pending announcement that the Boston Red Sox have appointed as their new Director of Operations a shomer shabbat, shomer kashrut Jewish young man by the name of Chaim Bloom. A native of Philadelphia Chaim attended Jewish Day Schools and is married to Aliza nee Hochman from Brookline Ma. who is also a day school alumnus. Together they have two children Yeshaya and Yehuda. Perhaps we should not be surprised anymore by the rise of observant Jews to prominent positions in the corporate world, but baseball has usually been immune to such practices. We however understand one important lesson. Day School education is a strong indicator to the perpetuation of our heritage. While it is no guarantee to eventual success the statistics (using a baseball term) show a clear pattern for future generations. We (at least I can speak for myself as a native Bostonian) wish Chaim and Aliza much success in his new endeavor and may they continue to be a role model to young Jews everywhere that day school education and an observant lifestyle is not an impediment but a true kiddush Hashem.

This Saturday night we begin reciting Selichos, the penitential prayers leading up to Rosh Hashannna and Yom Kippur. Chazal explain that during these prayers, Hashem so to speak is leading us as if Hashem is the Chazzan. Hashem dons the Tallis and we follow behind. How meaningful then to enter this period realizing Hashem is right with us as we seek forgiveness and support.

The Parsha begins this week with the rules of war and the necessary steps one must take to insure fairness and power, victory and morality. As we are in the midst of the month of Elul we are reminded of the importance of balancing humility with confidence prayer and ambition. This is the war we wage daily within our communities and families and resolve to win the battle as we approach the awesome days of the Yomim Noraim.

We have begun to sound the shofar. It is Elul time which is our opportunity to emphasize the power of teshuva (repentance) and maximize our potentials as good, kind and observant Jews. This past week we also witnessed a devastating hurricane in the Bahamas and the fury of nature increases our resolve to pray to Hashem for a year of health and happiness. Kesiva Vchasima Tova.
