¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

GOOD RIDDANCE
I remember well that when the Reverend Martin Luther King was assassinated in April 1968 and Governor George Wallace was shot and paralyzed a month later the very first words my mother uttered were “I hope it wasn’t a Jew.” The tragedy of King’s assassination was of course catastrophic, and everyone felt a profound sense of foreboding. Wallace, a Southern bigot for whom most Northerners had no affinity, was sympathized for being a victim of political violence. Yet these were the sentiments of many others as well symbolizing the fears and consternation (justified) of the Galus Jew and of course as we well know neither Lee Harvey Oswald nor James Earl Ray were Jewish.
This past week Dr. Claudine Gay resigned her presidency from Harvard University on the same day the Hamas operative Saleh al-Arouri was assassinated in Lebanon by a remote-controlled drone. Both events were blamed on the Jews. Interestingly President Gay was ultimately forced to resign over many other issues including allegations of plagiarism and as many non-Jews if not more so participated in advocating for her dismissal. Additionally, the United States had a five-million-dollar bounty on al-Arouri’s head (see rewardsfor
justice.net). Certainly, the two should never be compared as human beings as Saleh al Arouri was a murderous terrorist and President Gay is a peaceful and lawful academic who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nevertheless, the point is still the same. The Jews are to be blamed for this past week’s events. The difference between then and now is that we take pride in the Israeli initiative against our enemies in Lebanon and Gaza, and we applaud the Harvard Corporation for realizing (finally) that it was time to move on from its originative but disastrous appointment of Dr. Claudine Gay as its President.
This week’s parsha shows the consequences of state antisemitism. Pharaoh accuses the Jews of double loyalty and eventually recruits his subordinates to join in enslavement and the killing of Jewish new-born boys. Yes, it is true that these events were prophesied at the covenant of the parts with Abraham and every phase of the servitude in Egypt was min hashamayim. We do however learn the lessons of history both from the Torah and beyond. We pray that our partners in Israel will soon finish the job and bring peace and redemption to the civilized world.

Am Yisroel Chai.

Good Shabbos
