Buried beneath the dramatic rivalry between Yaakov and Esau in this week’s Parsha is the great character of Yitzchak. In fact our Sages explain this is purposely so because Yitzchak symbolized the qualities of Gevura-who sublimated his ego for the sake of God and family. Therefore less is written about him than the others. Yitzchak also never left Eretz Yisroel and symbolized the kedusha and holiness of the land. Let us learn from him the importance of humility and sacrifice as we at the same time strive towards our individual kedusha.

SPECIAL SECURITY MEASURES: We at Anshe Motele join the rest of our Jewish community to stand in solidarity in condemnation of the horrific event that took place last Shabbos in Squirrel Hill. Our hearts go out to the victims and families as once again in our history we witness the spilling of Jewish blood and the harsh reminder that Antisemitism exists in our “daled amos”. While we are all in shock and fear there is a sense of urgency to pull together and do all we can do.

Through the OU, our shul is working together with the DHS, FBI, and the federal governments Secure Communities Network to bolster our shuls security as well as heighten our awareness and preperation in case chas v’shalom of a local attack. We are establishing a security committee that will be working directly with local and federal law enforcement, as well as networking with other Jewish facilities in and around our community to pool resources if needed.

As a security measure we will be keeping our shul doors locked during minyan times to prevent any unwanted entry to the building. A greeter will be established to permit entry for our congregants and other attendees. Emergency escape routes will be established as well as discussions with attendees of the protocals needed in case of an emergency. We can not control the emergency but we CAN control our response and reactions to minimize the damage caused in event of such a happening. Keep you eyes and ears open for unusual peoples or activities. Please be vocal about your concerns so everything may be addressed.

One of the most remarkable lessons of the akedah was that not only did Avrohom demonstrate absolute loyalty to G-d, but Yitzhok personified the character and quality of the Jewish son par- excellent. All the years of watching Avrohom and Sarah and learning from them led Yitzchak to that fateful day during which he showed his religious allegiance and faithfulness to G-d and Torah. We also pray that the next generation may be so inspired by our examples and devotion to Torah values. That is the best chinuch for our children.

When we travel to Israel today we sometimes gripe about the “long arduous trip” on the plane. Contrast this to the journey taken by Abraham at G-d’s request. His days were filled with great challenges yet realizing the goal he represented pure faith in G-d and was thus bestowed the title father of our nation. We take our cue from Abraham as we consider our travels to Eretz Yisroel with the same faith and trust in G-d.

When Noah left the ark for dry land the Torah records that he planted a vineyard to drink wine. As a result during a state of drunkenness he was abused by his Ham. We need not be Torah scholars to imagine the correlation between drunkenness, escapism and abuse. On the other hand we do not live a life of asthesicism either. It is up to us to live responsible and ethically in G-d’s world and aspire for a moral and ethical life.

Simchas Torah is not just a festive opportunity to conclude the holiday period beginning with Rosh Hashanah. It is also a beginning, middle and end: the beginning of the new sefer Torah, the middle of the oral Torah and the end of the five books of the Torah. Each step requires careful and religious observance along with a sense of simcha and joy on this celebratory day. Have a joyous Simchas Torah and may we always celebrate simchos.

As we prepare for Sukkos immediately after Yom Kippur we realize the excitement of being in shul all day translates to a newly empowered religious experience. Thus we immediately prepare by buying a lulav and esrog, building a sukkah, and the enthusiasm builds towards a crescendo on Simchas Torah. Have a wonderful Chag.

Yom Kippur is this Tues evening with Kol Nidrei at 6:45 in the main sanctuary. Shacharis early is at 7AM, and our main Minyan upstairs in the Main Sanctuary at 8AM. Mincha in the Main Sanctuary at 5PM, Neila 6:30, Shofar and Maariv at 7:30.

Rosh Hashanah begins the period known as asares yomei teshuva-the ten days of repentance. During this period we make a serious effort to change both the tone and tenor of our past misdeeds to one of righteousness. Even if we may falter and sin again it becomes as if we are sinning for the first time after repentance. Let us therefore redouble our efforts to work on our weaknesses, emphasize our strengths for a happy and healthy new year.
