IN COLD BLOOD
On November 15, 1959, two ex-cons brutally executed four members of the Hickock Family in Holcomb Kansas. The gruesome crime captured the attention of Americans everywhere and attained Truman Capote a household name with his blockbuster novel “In Cold Blood” published in 1966. The only crime novel to out-sell Capote’s masterpiece was “Helter Skelter” based on the brutal Charles Manson murders. Their crimes were so brutal as to be unimaginable to anyone who revere life. Interestingly the perpetrators who were apprehended and brought to justice were the subjects of intense psychological studies.
This past week we witnessed one of the most heinous crimes in modern world history. Six defenseless hostages were brutally executed by Arab terrorists hiding behind a facade of Israeli colonialism. This week also coincides with the first week of college and what do you know -protests have already begun against Israel and the Jews without any recognition of Arab brutality against Jews, Americans, and the civilized world. Ironically, the antisemitic protesters claim they are promoting peace.
We also witnessed another senseless school shooting in Georgia, this the same week we ushered in Chodesh Elul. Interestingly this Shabbos we read Parshas Shoftim which includes the laws of ir miklat, cities of refuge. Rav Yissocher Frand comments that during this month we too should enter a spiritual and emotional isolation to help achieve first a sense of spiritual cleansing and secondly a world sensitive to the ideals of human life.
May our Israeli brethren with the help of Hashem avenge their murders and may the families in Winder, Georgia be comforted. Let us daven during this Elul for Shalom al Yisroel and the world around us.

Brisket-The Essence of Passover
While you are preparing your shopping lists for the Yomim Noraim please note that Doug Elmhoff, husband to Vice President Harris has defined the essence of Judaism -BRISKET. Yes, you heard it. In front of thousands at the United Center and millions of others watching on television, the second husband proudly outlined his credentials as a good Jewish boy from Brooklyn who has demonstrated to the world how he can marry out of the faith and remain faithful to himself and his people. He attends Xmas dinner with Kamala’s family, and she makes a “mean brisket” on Passover! The damage Elmhoff has just generated to the Jewish world is indescribable. How many families will now normalize intermarriage and consider it tikkun olam? He has the audacity to speak about anti-Semitism without the decency to remain circumspect about his own contribution to a spiritual tsunami happening right in front of our television sets. Not since Bridget loves Bernie has a broadcast been so devastating; but Elmhoff can now take a bow and consider himself the true heir to that disastrous sitcom of the 1970’s.
This weeks Parasha Ekev should uplift us from the heels of despair and encourage the Jewish people to strengthen our identity through Torah observance and Jewish education. In this way we show the highest levels of tikkun olem by remaining true to ourselves and our identity and demonize inter-marriage.
And don’t forget, always cut against the grain!
