While reading an article on the recent and tragic shootings last weekend in El Paso and Dayton, I came across a fascinating and perhaps the most relevant comment of this entire tragic event. One of the members of the victims’ family shared his name and picture. The implication is that even mass shootings require our remembering every individual and mourning the loss of a mass group of people without emphasizing the individual does a disservice to both community and family.

The Churban (destruction) of the Beis Hamikdash is of course the central motif of Tisha B’Av. It is however the remembering of the individual, the ten martyrs. The children the burning of the Talmud, the crusades, expulsions and the holocaust that create the entire day into a day of mourning, questions and ultimately faith in Hashem.

May this year’s Tisha B’Av be turned into a day of simcha and mazel.

One of the books I read during the three weeks is “Depths” which is a memoir of sorts of Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau former Chief Rabbi of Israel who by the grace of Hashem survived the holocaust as a young boy and upon making aliya rose to the highest religious office in Israel and by extension (if not definition) the rest of the Jewish world. One follows his story and that of many others from the depths of despair to the bittersweet ecstasy of family, success and religious identity. It is a saga experienced by many others throughout Jewish history and while the reader is emotionally distraught throughout one nevertheless leaves with hope and triumph. These are the sentiments of the three weeks and when we stand up following the recitation of the Kinot we also stand symbolically with and for all the Rabbi Laus throughout Jewish history.

We begin the three week period beginning with the 17^th day of Tamuz on Shabbos (Sunday observed) and concluding on Tisha B’Av. During these days we observe certain customs reserved for mourners as we mourn the loss of the Temple in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago. These laws and customs have helped us to remember the past and resolve for the future. By observing this period we never lose sight of the importance of our people the nation and the Torah.

This week’s Parsha Chukas records the death of Aharon. In one of the most dramatic and sad passages in the Torah Aharon ascends the Mountain Hor and is laid to rest never to return to the people he so loved and vice versa. The Bnei Yisroel overcome with sadness are unable to accept his death immediately and require proof of his passing. They then must mourn thirty days before resuming their daily lives. Aharon represented the consummate peace maker, spiritual counselor and priestly judiciousness. We the readers of the Torah followed the Israelite Nation through all the trials and tribulations since from slavery through the present. We mourn Aharon’s passing as if we ourselves were there and pray for the restoration of the Kehuna speedily in our generation.

The Kushner Plan to develop those areas in Israel mostly populated by the Arabs was unveiled this past week with surprisingly little fanfare. The proposed 50 billion dollar plan makes the Marshall plan for Europe after World War II look like a mouse to a cat. Yet the “Palestinian leadership rejected an invitation to attend and condemned the plan even prior to its unveiling. The Middle East press corps attributes it to lack of trust of the Trump administration. To what one may ask do they attribute their rejection to the Clinton negotiations, Obama proposals and the dovish Israeli government offers throughout the years.

The Torah tells us in this week’s Parshas Shelach that conquest of the land is dependent on Hashem’s authority and carried out by a Jewish nation resolved to fulfill their destiny. This resolve has allowed the Jewish nation to grow and prosper even in the most difficult of times. If only the population of Gaza and Ramallah had such insight.
