¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

As the City Council voted (by a bare majority) in favor of a ceasefire resolution in Gaza, 3 more schoolchildren were shot at, one of them murdered outside their school (Senn H.S.) and the homicide rate in our city continues to increase, Ironically, the Israeli hostages in Gaza will eventually be freed but the citizens of this city will remain hostage to crime, poor performing schools and corruption that makes Mahmoud Abbas look like a choir boy. Why should parents be forced to send their children to poor performing public schools and repeat the generational mistakes of the past? Perhaps the city council might call for a ceasefire in a city that threatens every law-abiding citizen throughout the State. Instead, we are told to spray paint your catalytic converter, buy a club to protect from carjacking, get video cameras to deflect invasion, planters in front of stores to protect against smash and grab, and hire private security to protect houses of worship. Thank you to the “progressives” at City Hall for showing their true colors. They purposely thwarted any effort at compromise (see attached Rabbinic letter) to express progressive positions, and in fact if it hurts the Jews who in many respects form the foundation of liberal values then so much the better. The truth is we care more about our fellow citizens than do they. Our response should be prayer, advocacy, and resolve. This week’s Parshas Yisro recorded the Ten Commandments which require our belief that both the moral and religious laws are one before Hashem.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

GOOD RIDDANCE
I remember well that when the Reverend Martin Luther King was assassinated in April 1968 and Governor George Wallace was shot and paralyzed a month later the very first words my mother uttered were “I hope it wasn’t a Jew.” The tragedy of King’s assassination was of course catastrophic, and everyone felt a profound sense of foreboding. Wallace, a Southern bigot for whom most Northerners had no affinity, was sympathized for being a victim of political violence. Yet these were the sentiments of many others as well symbolizing the fears and consternation (justified) of the Galus Jew and of course as we well know neither Lee Harvey Oswald nor James Earl Ray were Jewish.
This past week Dr. Claudine Gay resigned her presidency from Harvard University on the same day the Hamas operative Saleh al-Arouri was assassinated in Lebanon by a remote-controlled drone. Both events were blamed on the Jews. Interestingly President Gay was ultimately forced to resign over many other issues including allegations of plagiarism and as many non-Jews if not more so participated in advocating for her dismissal. Additionally, the United States had a five-million-dollar bounty on al-Arouri’s head (see rewardsfor
justice.net). Certainly, the two should never be compared as human beings as Saleh al Arouri was a murderous terrorist and President Gay is a peaceful and lawful academic who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nevertheless, the point is still the same. The Jews are to be blamed for this past week’s events. The difference between then and now is that we take pride in the Israeli initiative against our enemies in Lebanon and Gaza, and we applaud the Harvard Corporation for realizing (finally) that it was time to move on from its originative but disastrous appointment of Dr. Claudine Gay as its President.
This week’s parsha shows the consequences of state antisemitism. Pharaoh accuses the Jews of double loyalty and eventually recruits his subordinates to join in enslavement and the killing of Jewish new-born boys. Yes, it is true that these events were prophesied at the covenant of the parts with Abraham and every phase of the servitude in Egypt was min hashamayim. We do however learn the lessons of history both from the Torah and beyond. We pray that our partners in Israel will soon finish the job and bring peace and redemption to the civilized world.

Am Yisroel Chai.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

One of the most perplexing difficulties in reviewing the Parshiot of these last few weeks is how is it that the brothers never figured out that the viceroy of Egypt was Joseph. All signs pointed to his identity yet not one of them had the ability to surmise his identity. He recognized them right away but not vice versa. The answer of course is that when one is blinded by time and space then even the most obvious signals disappear. Israeli society was completely unprepared for the Yom Kippur war in October 1973 and ditto for the massacre in October 2023 fifty years later. This same visionless phenomenon is repeated over and over as we engage in the routineness of life without regard to the spiritualty of our environment and to the dangers that lurk right behind. The key to a more perfect religious world (and union) lies in our ability to recognize the challenges both physical and religious. In this way may we see the unity of Joseph and Yehudah along with Eretz Yisroel and Medinat Yisroel.

Am Yisroel Chai.

¨From the Rabbi’s Study¨

In honor of the Senate hearing last week on anti-semitism in the college system I hereby resubmit my column from Parshas Lech Lecha.

As a native Bostonian I grew up in the shadow of Harvard, Brandeis, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, and Northeastern. We used to look forward to the Beanpot Hockey Tournament, which is always a sell out at Boston Garden. We skipped school to spend a day at the Harvard COOP and browse the aisles of books, posters, records, and preppy clothes. We rode the red line to Harvard Square and nonchalantly walked the sacred grounds of Charles William Elliot and John Fitzerald Kennedy. My two uncles attended Harvard and my aunt went to Radcliffe College during the quota days of the 20’s and 30’s and were easily recognizable by the Brahmins as the poor (and overly smart) Jews from Roxbury. But Cambridge was the place to be. Future Presidents, Supreme Court Judges, CEO’s and the movers and shakers of the country and world diplomacy all walked these hallowed halls. The great American dream for a young Jewish high school senior was to be accepted and attend any one of the Ivy League’s or at least the second tier of the 50 best Colleges in America.

That dream today is now a nightmare. The Campus has become a bastion of radical antisemitism under the guise of so-called Palestinian rights. They mask their hatred of Jews and even now are unable to condemn pure evil because it does not fit their agenda. The Antisemitism of the quota filled admission departments and the Brahmin tradition has been replaced by an evil core of those who hide behind a supposed progressive agenda. The kosher dining hall at Cornell is a danger zone. And make no mistake about it. This animosity is not limited to the east coast universities. I recall visiting University of California Berkeley over a decade ago with the late great Rav Gedaliah Dov Schwartz while we were in the Bay area for a series of shiurim that the Av Beth Din delivered in Palo Alto San Francisco and Oakland. There was a sign on the highway, and we decided to make a short detour to see this venerable institution. On entering the campus, we were immediately greeted by a myriad of signs broadcasting “Free Palestine.” Needless to say, I made a quick U-turn and went straight to the airport three hours earlier than originally planned.

So, to all of you seniors and juniors. Save your money on expensive college admission coaches, reduce the stress of the college application safari, and go to YU, Touro, a Seminary or Yeshiva that offers a credit transfer program. Become a lawyer, a doctor, a plumber. Electrician, an engineer, computer scientist researcher, and win a Nobel prize. You need not however attend the secular universities that may induce you into a slumber towards assimilation and victimization.

Avrohom experienced many trials and tribulations culminating in the Akedah Yitzcok in this week’s Parsha. We need not test ourselves in this same manner.
